Laser Hair Removal and VANIQA
Clinical studies have shown that VANIQA improves the effectiveness of laser hair removal. One study with 31 women showed that after 6 months of treatment, complete or almost complete hair removal was achieved in 94% of patients receiving laser plus VANIQA, compared to 68% for patients receiving laser without VANIQA.
A second study with 54 patients found a similar effect with the combination of VANIQA plus laser between 6 and 22 weeks of treatment. Approximately 75% of these patients reported a preference for combination therapy over laser treatment alone.
Laser hair removal is a non-surgical procedure, performed in a physician's office or spa, to achieve long-term reduction of unwanted facial hair. When doctors laser facial hair, they use beams of concentrated light to penetrate into the hair follicle and destroy the hair within that follicle.
In general, laser facial hair removal works best in those with dark hair on lighter skin, however, newer technologies have made the procedure safe and effective in those with darker skin as well. Blonde, red, or gray hairs are generally less responsive to laser hair removal treatment. Coarse hair (terminal hair) responds much better to laser hair removal treatment than fine hair or "peach fuzz" (vellus hair).
Most people require a series of 4-6 laser hair removal treatments over time to gradually remove unwanted facial hair. Some people may experience some re-growth, even after multiple treatments. Touch-ups may be needed. The cost to laser facial hair can be up to $350 or more per treatment, depending on the professional performing the treatment and the size of the area being treated.

- Is FDA approved & dermatologist recommended.
- Works for women of all ethnicities and skin types
- VANIQA works by reducing the rate of hair growth, so over time you should be using your current method of hair removal less frequently.
What is VANIQA and how can it help?
- VANIQA® (eflornithine HCl) Cream, 13.9% is the first and only FDA approved prescription cream clinically proven to reduce the growth of unwanted facial hair (UFH) in women. Over time you may be removing hair less often, and many women see significant results within just 8 weeks. In clinical studies, the longer VANIQA was used, the better it worked.
How VANIQA Works
How does It work?
- VANIQA works right at the source of the problem, in the hair follicle. It is thought that VANIQA works during the growth stage of the hair cycle by blocking an enzyme in the follicle that is necessary for hair to grow.
How do I use it?
- Use VANIQA after cleansing and before applying moisturizer, sunscreen or cosmetics. Apply a thin layer of VANIQA on the affected area of your face twice a day, until it's absorbed into your skin.
- You may want to use VANIQA once in the morning and once at night as part of your daily skin care routine, since you should wait 8 hours between applications, and at least 4 hours before washing your face again. Remember, you should continue to use your current method of hair removal.
How long do I use it?
- VANIQA does not work instantly and it takes time for results to become visible, but you should see improvement in as early as eight weeks. Using VANIQA doesn't mean you don't have to deal with unwanted facial hair anymore. VANIQA complements your current method of hair removal by reducing the rate of hair growth, so over time you should be removing UFH less frequently.
- If you don't apply VANIQA for an extended period of time, hair will begin growing at the same rate as it used to grow. Once you resume using VANIQA twice a day, everyday, hair growth should slow again.
Are there any side effects?
- In clinical trials, some women reported mild and temporary skin irritations such as redness, stinging, burning, tingling, acne or rash. Only 2% of women discontinued their participation in studies due to side effects related to VANIQA.
- If you experience any of the above symptoms for an extended period of time while using VANIQA, discontinue use and consult your doctor.
